AFCON 2023: Perfect Senegal seal deal, Cameroon survive scare to squeeze to knockouts
Senegal continued with their excellent show at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after a 2-0 victory over Guinea at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium, Yamoussoukro, on Tuesday.
Goals from Abdoulaye Seck and Iliman Ndiaye ensured that the Lions of Teranga sealed a Round of 16 spot with a maximum nine points.
Meanwhile, Guinea, who are on four points, are set to also seal a spot of their own in the knockout rounds.
With points and a goal difference of negative one, Guinea could have done just enough to sail through as one of the best-placed third-ranked teams.
On the other hand, Cameroon survived a late scare from Gambia to make it to the Round of 16 of the Ivory Coast edition.
In the end, the Indomitable Lions edged Gambia 3-2 at the Stade de la Paix, Bouake on the evening.
Goals from Karl Toko Ekambi, Christopher Wooh, and James Wooh's own goal gave Cameroon three points that had them sail through to knockouts.
Ablie Jallow and Ebrima Colley netted Gambia's goals on an evening they said goodbye to this edition's action.
Muhammed Sanneh nearly grabbed a leveller for Gambia that would have sent Cameroon home, but he was adjudged for offside.
Gambia will head home, having failed to collect a single point in the group stages.
