AFCON 2023: Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro calls up six-goal star to replace injured Boniface
Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro has moved in swiftly to replace Victor Boniface in Nigeria’s squad ahead of the team’s Africa Cup of Nations opener against Equatorial Guinea.
Boniface out of Nigeria's squad for AFCON
Peseiro had named Boniface in his 25-man squad, with the Bayer Leverkusen man linking up with the squad in the United Arab Emirates.
However, Boniface had to pull out of the squad six days before the Super Eagles’ opening clash against Equatorial Guinea.
The 23-year-old reportedly picked up a groin in training and he is expected to be out for about six weeks.
Boniface’s injury is a big blow for Nigeria but Peseiro has moved quickly to replace the former Union SG striker.
Moffi to replace Boniface in Nigeria's AFCON squad
The Portuguese tactician has called up OGC Nice striker Terem Moffi to replace the Bayer Leverkusen man.
Moffi was included in the provisional squad released but controversially missed out on the 25-man team.
However, the 24-year-old now has the chance to represent his country at a first major tournament after he was called up by Peseiro.
But Moffi’s participation is not guaranteed yet as his French club OGC Nice still needs to give him approval to go.
Moffi is one of Super Eagles’ top attackers in Europe’s top five leagues this season, with six goals and two assists in 16 league games. The 24-year-old has 12 caps for Nigeria, with four goals to his name.
