An ugly incident involving Premier League referee Anthony Taylor and his family occurred at the Budapest airport where AS Roma fans were seen abusing the match official.

The attack followed a shocking reaction from Roma boss Jose Mourinho after his club lost the Europa League final against Sevilla.

Sevilla made it an unprecedented seventh Europa League title after a thrilling 4-1 win over Roma on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time in the final on Wednesday night.

The Englishman was the centre referee for the Europa League final between Roma and Sevilla alongside other Premier League referees on the night.

However, Roma fans were not impressed by Taylor’s handling of the game and were seen abusing him and his family at the airport in Budapest.

In a video making the rounds on social media, Taylor was spotted with his family led by security at the airport terminal with the irate Roma fans.

Supporters of the Italian club could be seen whistling, abusing, and throwing chairs and drinks as Taylor and his family which included his daughter who was pushed to tears made their way through the crowd.

PGMOL reacts

As per Daily Star, the referee association in England has swiftly reacted to the video of abuse from Roma fans.

According to the report, PGMOL has acknowledged and condemned the trending video and is appalled by the incident they described as ‘unjustified and abhorrent.’

“PGMOL is aware of videos circulating on social media showing Anthony Taylor and his family being harassed and abused at Budapest Airport,” the referee body stated.

“We are appalled at the unjustified and abhorrent abuse directed at Anthony and his family as he tries to make his way home from refereeing the UEFA Europa League final. We will continue to provide our full support to Anthony and his family."

Taylor, 44, was also confronted at the parking lot by former Manchester United and Chelsea manager, Mourinho, as reported by Pulse Sports Nigeria, calling the match official and “f***king disgrace.”
