Arsenal respond to racism row over women's team squad photograph

Earlier this month, Arsenal shared a contentious photo of their Women's Super League team on social media, in which there was not a single player of colour.

The absence of any players of colour in the Arsenal women's team squad photo for this season drew criticism from fans.

As a picture of their women's team generated a race debate, Arsenal have now responded to clear the air about the situation.

According to reports from the Mirror, an "emergency meeting" was requested by the board to discuss the situation of the alleged racism claim by fans.

After the meeting, A comment from Arsenal regarding the lack of diversity on their women's team was issued and reported by The Athletic.

The statement says, "We acknowledge our current women's first-team squad does not reflect the diversity that exists across the club and the communities we represent.

"Increasing participation among young women and girls from diverse backgrounds is a key priority for us at academy level, with specific measures in place to improve pathways and accessibility.

"Across all our teams, including our men’s and women’s academies, we’re proud of our players from diverse backgrounds who have contributed to our history, success and culture. 

“It’s a priority for the club to continue to drive greater diversity and inclusion and create a sense of belonging for everyone connected to the club."

Arsenal have a squad full of internationals, including Leah Williamson, Beth Mead, Manuela Zinsberger, Alessia Russo, Vivianne Miedema and the Swedish coach Jonas Eidevall.
