Barcelona are reportedly interested in a summer move for Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino, who is also on the transfer list of Premier League side Arsenal and LALIGA rival Atletico Madrid.
The 28-year-old has been a steady performer for La Reale since joining from Newcastle in the summer of 2018. His contract is set to expire at the end of next summer, and he is stalling on renewal as he desires an advanced step in his career.
Barcelona in Merino race
As LALIGA president Javier Tebas confirmed, Barcelona's finances have improved, and they are close to attaining competitiveness in the transfer window.
They have identified Nico Williams as their primary target for the summer following the Athletic Club’s winger performance at the Euros. However, they also want to make an addition in midfield.
According to Relevo, the Blaugrana are evaluating low-cost targets in midfield and have identified Merino, who is available for €20 million, as an ideal target. They will have to battle the likes of Arsenal and Atletico Madrid, two clubs with superior finances for his signature, but it is believed Merino prioritises a move to Barcelona.
The central defender had to be taken off in the Copa America quarter-final triumph against Brazil after he sustained an injury. The initial prognosis forecasted a six-eight weeks period on the sidelines. However, upon further tests, it has been confirmed he will be out for longer.
