President Museveni Makes AFCON 2027 Commitment as CAF Assesses Uganda's Preparations

President Yoweri K. Museveni has personally assured the Confederation of African Football (CAF) of Uganda's full commitment to preparing the nation to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Kenya and Tanzania.

The assurance was given during a meeting at State House on Tuesday, September 22, with a CAF delegation led by Secretary General Samson Adamu.

The delegation, which also included CAF Country Infrastructure Manager Bianca Wambui, is currently in Uganda to evaluate the country's progress ahead of the continental tournament.

With the tournament scheduled for June 2027, the visit provides CAF officials with an opportunity to assess Uganda's preparations and identify areas that may require additional attention before the competition gets underway.

The CAF technical team has been inspecting stadiums, training facilities, and other essential infrastructure required to host the prestigious event.

The inspection comes as the three East African co-hosts continue working towards meeting CAF's requirements for the tournament. Uganda's progress on its key venues has received positive attention from the visiting delegation.

During the briefing, Wambui praised the advancements made so far, particularly in the development of key venues.

"I would like to commend the efforts that have been put in so far, especially in terms of the stadiums and training grounds," she noted. "The progress is commendable."

According to a statement from the Presidential Press Unit, President Museveni promised the officials that his government would tackle any remaining challenges to ensure Uganda is fully prepared for its co-hosting duties.

The President also expressed confidence that the country would meet the expectations of CAF as preparations continue towards the tournament.

"I will unlock whatever needs to be unlocked, and I’m very sure the AFCON people will be very happy when they come here," President Museveni stated, vowing to take all necessary measures to meet the tournament's requirements.

The assurance places continued emphasis on government support as Uganda works to complete the infrastructure and logistical preparations required for the continental showpiece.

The CAF Secretary General also took the opportunity to request the President's support in fast-tracking a single visa arrangement between Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.

The proposed arrangement would make it easier for football fans, teams, officials and other visitors to move between the three host countries during AFCON 2027.

With matches expected to take place across the three East African nations, streamlined cross-border travel could play an important role in the overall tournament experience.

Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania are continuing their preparations for the historic regional edition of AFCON, with infrastructure, transport, accommodation and other tournament requirements remaining key areas of focus ahead of June 2027.
