Benni McCarthy Explains Reason He Dropped Byrne Omondi For Farouk Shikhalo in Harambee Stars’ Win Over Zambia
Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has explained his decision to drop in-form goalkeeper Byrne Omondi for Farouk Shikhalo in Kenya’s 1-0 victory over Zambia in the final group match of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) at Kasarani Stadium on Sunday.
Kenya had already secured qualification to the quarter-finals before the clash, but McCarthy was keen to rotate his squad while ensuring the team finished top of Group B.
The narrow win, courtesy of a disciplined defensive display, guaranteed Stars a place in the knockouts on home turf.

Despite Omondi’s excellent form throughout the tournament, Shikhalo was trusted to start and impressed with his command at the back. McCarthy praised the goalkeeper’s role in keeping the defense organized while stressing that clean sheets were a collective effort.
“For goalkeepers, communication with the defense is key. Faruq did a great job today, keeping the defense organized. But it’s not just about the backline — we defend as a team,” McCarthy said.
“Everyone works hard, and that makes it difficult for opponents to score. We’ve only conceded one goal in the entire tournament so far, and that shows the discipline and commitment of the players. Now we need to push on, get stronger, and score more goals.”
Gor Mahia defender Sylvester Owino remains the only player to have played every minute for Kenya in the competition, underlining his growing importance to the national side.
Kenya now prepares for a quarter-final showdown against Madagascar, with the possibility of progressing to the semifinals in Kampala and potentially contesting the final in Nairobi.
McCarthy, who has emphasized mentality and unity since taking charge, underlined the trust that binds the squad together.
“When we step on the pitch, we don’t fear anyone. For me, it’s about trust — the players trust me to guide them, and they trust each other to fight not just for themselves but for the country,” he explained.
“This isn’t just a job; it’s our livelihood. The team has shown the right mentality, and we must continue improving, winning matches, and staying focused on our ultimate goal.”
With momentum building and confidence high, Harambee Stars will aim to extend their impressive run and edge closer to continental glory.
