Brazil defeats Colombia on penalties after 8-goal thriller to win 2025 Women's Copa América

Brazil's women's national football team defeated Colombia in a thrilling final to secure their ninth Copa América Femenina title at the Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado in Quito, Ecuador.

Brazil's journey to the title began with a commanding 2-0 victory over Venezuela in their opening group stage match.

They continued their dominance with a 6-0 thrashing of Bolivia, followed by a 4-1 win against Paraguay, before concluding group play with a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Colombia.

In the knockout stage, they delivered a resounding 5-1 victory over Uruguay in the semifinals.

In the final Real Madrid forward Linda Caicedo stunned the Brazilian defense by putting Colombia in front in the 25th minute.

However, Angelina leveled the score with a penalty kick in the 45th minute as both sides went into the break tied.

The second half saw Colombia regain the lead in the 69th minute through Tarciane, only for Amanda Gutierres to equalize for Brazil in the 80th minute.

Mayra Ramirez put Colombia back in front in the 88th minute, but legendary striker Marta rose to the occasion, scoring in added time to force extra time.

Marta then put Brazil ahead in the 105th minute, though Colombia's Leicy Santos equalized in the 115th minute, sending the match to a penalty shootout.

Brazil triumphed 5-4 in a very tense penalty shootout to be crowned champions.

This comes after Nigeria defeated Morocco to win the Women's Africa Cup of Nations.

Marta was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player (MVP) with her highlight the equalizer and extra-time goal that kept Brazil's hopes alive.

Colombia's Katherine Tapia was honored as the Best Goalkeeper of the tournament.
