Uganda have a tricky match against the 2022 beaten finalists but have to impress especially after co-hosts Kenya and Tanzania won their opening matches, putting them under pressure.

Tanzania opened the tournament with a 2-0 win over Burkina Faso on Saturday before Kenya beat DR Congo 1-0 on Sunday and Uganda know they cannot start on the backfoot.

The Cranes have been preparing for the match, counting on home support to get them over the line, with the encounter set to test them to the limit given the quality and pedigree of the Algerians.

What is Giving Coach Byekwaso Banking On?

Uganda coach Morley Byekwaso knows the task at hand is not easy but is banking on home support to boost his players’ confidence.

“Playing here means we must make history and make it through the group. We want to do our best to qualify and with fans behind us, we are hosts, we are at home and this is our first game, we need to win because it is important in the tournament,” said Byekwaso.

Algeria and Uganda have met five times before with the North Africans winning four of those games and just one win for the Cranes which adds to their pressure.

At CHAN, the two sides met in Sudan in 2011 with the Desert Foxes winning 2-0 and their last meeting was in the World Cup qualifier in June 2024, when the North Africans secured a 2-1 victory.
