'Worst season ever!' - Reactions as Real Madrid boot lacklustre Chelsea out of Champions League
Real Madrid defeated Chelsea 4-0 on aggregate to progress to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the 11th time in the last 13 seasons.
Los Blancos were victorious with a 2-0 win in the first leg of the quarterfinals at the Santiago Bernabeu before replicating the win on the night at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues came into this contest with a point to prove amid their horrible campaign so far this season, but the first-leg defeat at the Santiago Bernabéu left Frank Lampard’s men with a huge mountain to climb, although, expectations were low on the night at the Bridge.
As they did in the first leg the hosts started the game brightly creating chances but failing to be clinical.
The best chance of the first half for Chelsea came when Trevoh Chalobah picked out Reece James down the right-hand side; his cross was played into the path of N'Golo Kanté by Kai Havertz, but the Frenchman’s scuffed shot went well wide.
Real Madrid nearly stretched their lead minutes later as Rodrygo’s shot cannoned off the post after he was found by Dani Carvajal.
The visitors grew into the game and saw chances fly them by as the half drew on.
But the Blues put up a real fight in the opening period as they went into the break without conceding despite still trailing on aggregate.
Second Half: Chelsea vs Real Madrid
In the second half, Chelsea came close once more as Kanté’s close-range attempt was blocked by Éder Militão after the Frenchman was set up by Conor Gallagher.
But it was the visitors who would celebrate first at Stamford Bridge as Rodrygo finished off a brilliant counter-attacking move to increase their aggregate lead to 3-0 in the 58th minute.
Following the goal, the hosts looked mentally deflated with nothing to play for anymore but pride.
Mykhailo Mudryk was brought in the second half and offered a glimpse of spark for the hosts midway through the second half, with the Ukrainian missing a crucial chance to grab a consolation for the Blues.
The travelling fans found cause to jubilate once more as Rodrygo then added his second in the 80th minute, in what turned out to be the final nail in Chelsea’s UCL coffin, ensuring Los Blancos claimed a fourth win from their last five clashes with English clubs outside of Spain.
It finished full time at the Bridge Chelsea 0-2 Real Madrid as the Blues are now winless in their last 7 matches in all competitions.
