Chelsea vs Brentford: The record the Blues must avoid against the Bees — Preview
Frank Lampard will be hoping to end what seems a long wait for his first win as Chelsea boss in his second stint as manager at the club when they host Brentford on Wednesday night.
Lampard replaced former manager Graham Potter who was sacked following a poor run of form in the Premier League.
However, the return of the Chelsea legend has hardly inspired any changes at the club following a run of four consecutive defeats in his first four games as the interim manager.
That run also saw the Blues crash out of the Champions League after failing to score a single goal in 180 minutes against defending champions Real Madrid in their quarterfinal clashes.
Chelsea’s unenviable record under Lampard
The loss to LaLiga giants Los Blancos was the latest under Lampard which saw Chelsea record their worst run without a win in 28 years.
Not since 1995 had the Blues gone that long without a win in the Premier League era.
Lampard and his Blue Army will have another chance to stop rolling in the mud when they host Brentford later tonight. The Blues must take all three points or make another unenviable history.
The Bees must not sting
When Chelsea and Brentford take to Stamford Bridge in the Premier League later this evening, it will be an interesting battle between two winless sides.
The hosts have failed to win any of their last seven matches while the visitors, who have Nigeria Super Eagles Frank Onyeka, have failed to win their last six.
Consequently, heading into this particular fixture, both sides will see this as a chance to put a quick stop to their respective runs.
But this is even more so for Lampard’s Blue Army who are on the brink of setting another bad record.
If anything other than a win at home tonight, the 44-year-old and his Blues will record the third-worst run in the history of Chelsea.
Key Stat: 21 of Chelsea’s current first-team players were not born the last time the club went eight matches without a win.
Head-to-head
In terms of their head-to-head, it suggests another difficult night for the home side who have failed to beat their visitors in the last two meetings.
The Bees have won one and drawn the other of the previous two, with the last a dull goalless affair.
You have to go way back to the FA Cup in the 2017 season for Chelsea’s last win over Brentford at Stamford Bridge, where the Bees put four past the helpless Blues when they last visited.
