Copa America: Luis Suarez scores wins Man of the Match as Uruguay beats Canada to 3rd place
In the Copa America tournament's third-place match on Saturday night in Charlotte, Uruguay defeated Canada 4-3 on penalty kicks after Luis Suarez scored a late goal to keep his team in the game.
In ordinary play, the teams were tied 2-2 before moving on to the penalty kick phase.
Sergio Rochet of Uruguay made a crucial save to deny Ismael Kone's stutter-step drive, while Alphonso Davies of Canada missed the center of the crossbar with the net wide open in the last attempt.
Rodrigo Bentancur scored a goal in regulation for Uruguay, and Jonathan David and Kone scored goals for Canada in regulation time.
Suarez scores for Uruguay
In the Canada vs. Uruguay game, Suárez came on at halftime and showed great decisiveness by scoring the game-tying goal in stoppage time and converting his penalty in the shootout.
In the second minute of stoppage time in the second half, Suarez scored the biggest goal of the evening, bringing his tally of goals for the Uruguay national team to 69.
Jose Gimenez passed to Suarez as he dashed toward the goal.
With an easy left-footed shot that found its way past Canada goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair and into the left corner of the net, he found himself wide open.
For Canada, David, Moise Bombito, and Mathieu Choiniere all converted penalty kicks.

Bentancur, Suarez, Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Federico Valverde converted for the Uruguayans.
Suarez won the title of Superior Player of the Match for his efforts.
At 37 years old, he may be playing in his final Copa América encounter. Over four editions, he participated in 19 games and scored 8 goals.
2011 saw Suárez win the Copa América, get a goal in the championship game, and be crowned the tournament's best player.
Argentina faces Colombia in Miami to decide the winner of the 2024 Copa America.
