AFCON 2023: Reactions as fans drag Daniel Amokachi over Commentary skills
Amokachi, known for his illustrious playing career, entered the realm of football commentary with high expectations.
However, his analysis during the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) left many fans questioning his relevance in the football broadcasting landscape.
Amokachi was on co-commentary duties for the opening game of the 2023 AFCON as hosts Ivory Coast recorded a comfortable 2-0 win against Guinea Bissau in the first game of the tournament in Group A.
Social media users on X were flooded with comments highlighting what fans perceived as “beer parlour” insights and a lack of in-depth knowledge of current football dynamics.
Some fans argued that Amokachi's commentary failed to capture the nuances of Saturday’s game, while others perceived his assessments to be bizarre.
One user wrote: “Why is Amokachi a commentator? So annoying”
Before another commented: “Amokachi remains one of the greats in Nigerian football. However, what sort of Otukpo football commentary is this?”
A third user wrote: “Someone needs to tell Daniel Amokachi that this isn’t beer palour football gist”

Years ago, Amokachi was linked to a romantic relationship with Nollywood actress, Tonto Dikeh.
However, Tonto Dikeh denied the rumours stating the pair were just friends after pictures emerged of the duo spending time together.
During his playing days, Amokachi played as a forward who notably played in the Premier League for Everton and was part of their 1995 FA Cup winning team.
He also played top flight football in both Belgium and Turkey.
