Denis Onyango Makes Further History in South Africa as He Lifts Africa’s Biggest Prize With Sundowns

Legendary Uganda Cranes goalkeeper Denis Onyango has added another feather on his glittering cap after winning his second continental title.

Onyango, who remains the only Ugandan player to have won the prestigious CAF Champions League, has now become a two-time winner of the competition after his club Mamelodi Sundowns won the 2026 crown.

Sundowns survived a hostile environment and a barrage of attacks from Moroccan side AS FAR in the final second leg in Rabat as they played out a 1-1 draw to win 2-1 on aggregate, having secured a 1-0 victory at home a week earlier.

The South African giants went down 1-0 after 40 minutes when Mohamed Hrimat scored a penalty but they replied five minutes later through a well-taken strike from midfielder Teboho Mokoena.

Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams would save a second-half penalty from Hrimat to preserve his team’s advantage and they held firm to see out the game and win their second Champions League trophy.

The win comes 10 years since Onyango’s heroics earned the Brazilians their maiden Champions League title in 2016 with the veteran goalkeeper captaining the team when Pitso Mosimane was in charge.

Onyango’s gametime has reduced, but he still played two games in the Champions League this season and is one of two remaining players from the ‘Class of 2016’ alongside Themba Zwane, to have won their second continental title.

With 12 Premier Soccer League titles, nine won with Sundowns, three with SuperSport United, Onyango added to his trophy cabinet, making him the most decorated player in South African football.
