D'Tigress: Amy Okonkwo named Afrobasket MVP, makes All-Tournament team
Nigeria's D'Tigress defeated Mali 78 to 64 on the final day of the 2025 Women’s AfroBasket, marking its fifth consecutive tournament victory—a first in history.
Nigeria has now extended its winning streak to 29-0, following this victory which goes back to the third-place match of the 2015 tournament in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
Amy Okonkwo named MVP
Amy Okonkwo entered the court with and was dominant from start to finish.
With a shooting record of 7-for-11 overall and 4-for-7 from three-point range, she ended the game with 19 points.
Okonkwo was not subbed and was later awarded the title of Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket.
Okonkwo has made her mark in an exclusive circle of athletes who have secured the MVP award on two occasions, and she also led the All-Tournament team.
She is now part of a select group of players who have received two MVP awards, alongside Mfon Udoka (2003 and 2005).
Okonkwo, who played the full 40 minutes of the title game, was named to the All-Tournament Team alongside Cierra Dillard (Senegal), Delicia Washington (South Sudan), Jane Asinde (Uganda), and Sika Kone (Mali).
Across the five games, Okonkwo averaged 14 points, 6 rebounds, and achieved an efficiency rating of 15.6.
Additional honors Maria Teresa Gakdeng (South Sudan) was the best rebounder, Jessica Thomas (Cameroon) was the best 3-point shooter, and Delicia Washington (South Sudan) was the best scorer.
The four African teams that advanced to the semifinals of the 2025 Women's AfroBasket have guaranteed their places in the qualifying tournaments for the 2026 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup, set for March of next year.
