Ugandan Youngster Provisionally Suspended by AIU Over Alleged Anti-Doping Violations

Ugandan distance running sensation Harbert Kibet has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) following allegations concerning the presence and use of prohibited substances.

The 21-year-old is facing charges related to triamcinolone acetonide and exogenous steroids, which were reportedly identified through Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (IRMS) analysis.

The development has abruptly interrupted the career of one of Uganda’s most promising young athletes at a time when his reputation was rapidly growing on the international stage.

Kibet burst onto the international scene in February with a stunning victory at the 10K Facsa Castellón in Spain.

Making his road 10-kilometre debut, he clocked a world-leading 26:39, a performance that at the time ranked as the fourth-fastest in history.

The remarkable run immediately placed Kibet among the sport’s emerging distance-running talents and generated considerable excitement around his future.

His progression was swift, with the Ugandan earning an opportunity to compete on the biggest international stages.

Kibet had already secured a place on Uganda’s national team for the World Championships in Tokyo last year, where he competed in the heats.

He later stepped onto the Diamond League circuit, with his most recent appearance coming at the Xiamen Diamond League in May.

There, Kibet finished 15th in the 5000 metres in 13:46.45, marking his latest competitive outing before the provisional suspension.

The suspension now casts uncertainty over the future of an athlete whose spectacular 10K performance had placed him firmly in the spotlight.

However, the AIU's provisional action should not be interpreted as a final finding of an anti-doping violation. Kibet's case will proceed through the established anti-doping process, during which the allegations and available evidence will be examined before a final determination is reached.

The outcome of that process will ultimately determine what comes next for the young Ugandan, whose career had appeared to be gathering significant momentum following his breakthrough performance in Spain.
