Kipchoge will be among elite runners lining up at the New York Marathon on Sunday, this year’s final Major Marathon, and while he still retains hopes of winning, he seems to have decided what the future will look like post the race.

The marathon GOAT, who will be 41 next Wednesday, will be competing in his 21st major race and New York will complete the set of the World Marathon Majors for him, having been to London, where he has won four times, Berlin, where he won five times and broke the world record twice, Chicago (won once), Tokyo (won once), Boston and most recently Sydney.

What Has Kipchoge Promised His Fans?

“I welcome all of you on Sunday afternoon. I will make a huge announcement with a beautiful programme [for] next year. Sunday afternoon will be the day,” Kipchoge told the media on Friday.

“I still line up and try to push myself. I am happy to still run at the age of 41 and still competing with the young people of 20 years,” he added, expressing optimism that he will perform well in the Big Apple.

“I am really happy that my muscles are still carrying me all through trainings and running. I am happy mingling with everybody and it is a gift.”

In a recent interview with Olympics.com, Kipchoge disclosed that New York will be his final Marathon Major race as he would have earned the Seven Star Hall of Fame honours and is looking to feature in other races around the world to continue inspiring others and spreading his running message.

What Does the Future Hold for Marathon Great?

“Absolutely yes!” Kipchoge responded when asked if New York would be his last major race. “A lot is in store which I will roll out after New York…it will be an interesting journey...to do other things.”

Reflecting on what lies ahead, the two-time Olympics marathon champion said he still has the energy to run and will now explore what the rest of the world has to offer.

“I will run even 50 kilometres in Saudi Arabia,” he added. “I want to do that extreme thing that can make somebody work hard and also get partners (sponsors) to rally for a cause.”

Kipchoge, the only man to run 42km under two hours, has enjoyed a 12-year marathon career that has seen him win 11 Marathon Major races, two Olympics gold over the distance while breaking as many world records.
