Eric Chelle willing to test new blood in crucial World Cup qualifiers
As Nigeria gear up for their decisive 2026 World Cup qualifier against Rwanda in Uyo, head coach Eric Chelle has suggested that he may hand debuts on home soil to fresh faces Felix Agu and Benjamin Fredrick.
Both players impressed in the Unity Cup clash against Jamaica earlier this year and are now pushing for opportunities in competitive action.
Agu and Fredrick in contention for landmark appearances
Felix Agu, the versatile Werder Bremen defender who previously represented Germany at U21 level, could officially tie his international future to Nigeria with even a brief appearance against Rwanda.
That prospect adds extra weight to Chelle’s team selection, particularly with Agu competing against established fullbacks like Ola Aina, Bright Osayi-Samuel and Bruno Onyemaechi.
For Benjamin Fredrick, the highly rated Brentford loanee, the scenario is different as competition is intense in central defence, where William Troost-Ekong, Calvin Bassey and Chidozie Awaziem remain first-choice options.
Still, his presence in the squad highlights Nigeria’s commitment to nurturing younger talent. Both defenders bring versatility and energy, qualities Chelle has been keen to stress are crucial in reshaping the Super Eagles.
Chelle keeping options open in high-stakes clash
While careful not to reveal his hand, Chelle emphasised that every player in the squad is capable of contributing at this stage of the campaign.
“They deserve to be here, they deserve to play this game and, like the captain said, this is an honour for them,” the Malian tactician explained at his press conference. He also noted that tactical choices would come down to what the team needs in these crucial qualifiers.
Nigeria cannot afford to slip up with South Africa also on the horizon, and while experience will likely dominate the starting lineup, Chelle’s willingness to test Agu and Fredrick underscores a broader vision of renewal.
Whether they step onto the pitch or not, both newcomers represent the Super Eagles’ future, and the future may come sooner than expected.
