Southgate set to exit England role

Southgate’s current contract is set to expire at the end of the 2024 Euros after the former Middlesbrough defender is unlikely to extend his contract beyond the tournament, and a number of names have come up as possible replacements.

Among them is ex-Chelsea and Brighton manager, Potter, who was unceremoniously axed from his position as Blues coach during the 2022/23 season after failing to produce results to back up a huge financial outlay.

Despite his failed Chelsea spell, Potter is still highly regarded in English circles thanks to his exploits at Brighton, and according to the Daily Mail is one of the leading candidates to land the job.

Potter among leading candidates to replace Southgate

The former Seagulls head coach will reportedly face competition from Newcastle’s Eddie Howe, Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola, Chelsea’s Mauricio Pochettino, and former Leicester and Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers.

Potter remains high on the list of possible replacements, as other managers could be heavily involved in their clubs’ projects by the time the need for change comes, while the former Chelsea boss also gets props for being an English candidate.

Southgate’s tenure has seen England reach the semifinals of the World Cup, as well as the final of the Euros, after they had failed to progress beyond the quarterfinal of either this century, and despite heavy criticism during his tenure, he will be a tough act to follow for any future Three Lions’ boss.
