Former Super Eagles forward Peter Odemwingie has criticised Serie A club Atalanta over their handling of Ademola Lookman’s future.
The Nigerian winger was at the centre of one of the summer’s biggest transfer sagas, with several European heavyweights chasing his signature, but the Bergamo outfit refused to sanction a move.
Odemwingie supports Lookman’s right to move on
Odemwingie, who once lit up the Premier League with West Bromwich Albion, believes Atalanta’s stance shows a lack of respect for what Lookman has contributed since arriving in Italy.
Speaking to Footy-Africa, the 43-year-old expressed his disappointment, stressing that Lookman had already proven his loyalty and should have been allowed to seek a new challenge.
“Lookman has exceeded every expectation since joining Atalanta. The fair thing would have been to let him pursue the path he desired,” Odemwingie said.
The Olympic Silver medalist added, “He’s played three full seasons, given his all, and even delivered European glory. What more could they have asked for? It doesn’t reflect well when a player who has carried the club on his shoulders is held back at this point in his career.”
Transfer saga leaves Lookman’s future uncertain
Lookman, 27, enjoyed a stellar 2023/24 campaign, scoring 15 goals and providing five assists in 31 appearances, helping Atalanta lift their first-ever European trophy.
His performances sparked interest from Bayern Munich, Tottenham Hotspur, Galatasaray, and Inter Milan, though Atalanta quickly shut down Inter’s approach to avoid strengthening a domestic rival.
The Serie A club held firm on their €50 million valuation and ultimately refused to sell, keeping the Nigerian international under contract against his wishes.
Despite the frustration, Lookman has been included in Ivan Juric’s UEFA Champions League squad for the season. However, with Galatasaray still monitoring the situation closely, questions about his long-term future in Bergamo are set to linger throughout the campaign.
