Former Super Eagles coach Finidi George kicked off his new NPFL campaign with Rivers United by securing a hard-fought 1-1 draw against reigning champions Remo Stars in an entertaining season opener in Abeokuta on Friday.

The biggest game of the opening weeekend burst into life early, delivering two goals within the opening 10 minutes as reported by the League.

Rivers United, who finished seven points adrift of champions Remo last season, started aggressively, taking the lead in the 3rd minute through Aniekeme Okon, a former Remo Stars player. His early strike gave the visiting team a promising start.

However, Remo Stars quickly responded, with Victor Mbaoma marking his return to the NPFL by leveling the score just six minutes later.

From then on, the Stars who lost to United in preseason dominated the first half, enjoying 58% possession and creating four chances compared to Rivers United’s two. Yet, despite their dominance, neither side could find the winner before halftime.

The second half saw Remo Stars come out with renewed intent. A beautiful passing move between Adedayo Olamilekan and Abubakar Ibrahim set up Adama Goita, but Rivers United’s defense held firm to keep the score level.

Later, Finidi’s Pride of Rivers, United, came close to retaking the lead when they struck the crossbar.

The game descended into drama during added time when a reckless foul by Rivers United defender Temple Emekayi led to a straight red card, reducing the visitors to ten men.

Victor Mbaoma returns to the NPFL with a bang.

Remo Stars maintain their unbeaten streak in season openers, now going three seasons without defeat in their first game.

Meanwhile, Finidi George’s Rivers United will look to build on this solid, if unspectacular, start as they target improvement in the 2025/2026 NPFL season after missing on the title last term.
