The Flying Eagles recently secured third place at the 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in Egypt, finishing the tournament on a high note after defeating hosts Egypt 4–1 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a goalless draw in regulation time.

The team had earlier fallen 1–0 in the semi-final to South Africa’s Amajita, who went on to lift the title.

Speaking after the tournament via sports 247, Bameyi reflected on the team’s journey and emphasised their commitment to building on their performance ahead of the global competition.

“We know where we need to do better - especially in front of goal,” said the centre-back.

He added, “The coaching crew and the players are on the same page, and we’re determined to get it right. The World Cup is a big stage, and we’ll be ready.”

Bameyi also took a moment to thank the fans and supporters who rallied behind the team during the U-20 AFCON campaign.

“This bronze is for the fans, our families, and everyone who stood by us. But we’re not done yet. There’s more to come from this team,” he said.

The Flying Eagles, under head coach Aliyu Zubairu, will now shift focus to preparations for the U-20 World Cup, where they aim to challenge for global glory and reaffirm Nigeria’s reputation as a powerhouse in youth football.

With a clear sense of purpose and a squad eager to make their mark on the world stage, the Flying Eagles will be among the teams to watch when the tournament kicks off in Chile.
