Following footstep - Rashford takes on the number 14 jersey of his idol Thierry Henry
Marcus Rashford's move to Barcelona was officially announced this Wednesday. The English forward, on loan from Manchester United, has already chosen his new number, according to the newspaper Sport: the iconic 14.
Rashford will be loaned until June 30, 2026, with Barcelona holding an option to buy him outright.
Rashford picks Henry's jersey number
The 27-year-old striker, according to Sport, via Abola, chose the number 14 as a tribute to his childhood idol, Thierry Henry, who wore the number for much of his career.
The emotional connection to the former French forward was decisive in his choice, a number that also carries significant historical weight at Barcelona.
Last season, the number 14 was worn by Pablo Torre, but before him, it was worn by legendary figures who made their mark on the club.
Players like Hristo Stoichkov, Michael Laudrup, Ronald Koeman, Javier Mascherano, and Philippe Coutinho all donned the 14. More recently, João Félix, a potential Benfica signing, also chose the number during his loan spell with the Catalan club in 2023/2024.
Interestingly, Johan Cruyff, who immortalized the number 14 playing for the Netherlands national team, always wore the number 9 during his five seasons at Barcelona.
It's worth noting that Marcus Rashford previously wore the number 14 for Manchester United's Under-21 team in 2015/2016.
