Former Man United manager gives update on his illness and his possible return to the touchline

Van Gaal announced his shocking prognosis and resigned as head coach of the Netherlands national team.

The former Netherlands coach revealed that he had kept his deadly form of cancer a secret from his players and was currently receiving treatment for it.

However, he has revealed positive news about his health which could see him return to the touchline.

When speaking on TV, Van Gaal, who needed urine bags and frequent radiation treatment, seemed upbeat about his situation.

Speaking to RTL, as reported by Daily Mail, Van Gaal said, “My health? I am doing well. After three years of radiation therapy, kidney infections, prostate surgery, I can finally manage it. 

“I can pee naturally again, which is important. But I can't make love anymore, that's a problem.”

Van Gaal also disclosed that he had received a job offer from Bayern Munich before the Bundesliga team appointed Vincent Kompany.

The former Ajax manager continued, “Bayern Munich asked me to be their manager. I was surprised.”

The Bavarian giants reportedly spoke with several managers and were turned down by a few; as a result, they ultimately decided on Kompany.

Between 2009 and 2011, Van Gaal led Bayern to victory in the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, and DFL-Supercup, as well as a runner-up place in the Champions League.

He managed Manchester United from 2014 to 2016, winning the FA Cup in his last season before he was fired by the club's executives.

Van Gaal then returned to the Netherlands dugout in 2021 after taking a break from managerial duties for five years.
