Gyokeres makes interesting Amorim comment ahead of Arsenal move
Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres recently praised the impact Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has had on his career, stating that the Portuguese’s system suited him perfectly.
What Gyokeres said
Ahead of the move to Arsenal, the Sweden international had an interview with French outlet L'Equipe where he discussed his tremendous rise and success at Sporting.
The former Coventry striker scored an incredible 108 goals in 114 matches for the Portuguese side, claiming back-to-back league titles. Most of the success came under Amorim, and Gyokeres accorded him due credit, despite the 40-year-old leaving halfway through his last season at the club to join Manchester United.
"We won two championships in a row for the first time in 71 years. It’s an incredible achievement, and of course, Ruben Amorim played a big role in that,” he said. “I can’t thank him enough. The style of play we had under his orders suited me perfectly.”
Amorim's decision to leave halfway through a season in which they were set for glory still has Gyokeres shaken, but he respects the decision.
“It was a shock," he said. "It’s never happened to me to see a manager leave in the middle of the season when everything was going well. It was surprising, but I totally understand his decision.”
