He has it — Celtic coach and Iheanacho explain why Super Eagles star took winning penalty at Kilmarnock
Super Eagles star Kelechi Iheanacho has already begun asserting himself at his new club, Celtic, revealing that he demanded to take the winning penalty in the victory against Kilmarnock.
What Iheanacho said
After the game, Iheanacho told Sky Sports that he asked the captain, Callum McGregor, to let him play the penalty, underscoring the confidence he has in his abilities.
"Big drama, big drama. [Sebastian Tounekti] made the difference in the first half and the second half,” he said, per the BBC.
"Three points, massive. I asked the skipper to let me take the penalty, and he said it was fine. It's very, very important to make my mark on my debut. Hopefully more to come."
He has the confidence — Brendan Rodgers
Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers, who coached Iheanacho at Leicester City, noted that the striker thrives when he is confident, adding that he knew Iheanacho had the self-belief to convert the high-pressure penalty.
"Second-half, we dominated the game and deservedly went in front with other opportunities," he told BBC Scotland.
"In the Celtic spirit, we kept going right to the end and delighted for Kelechi Iheanacho get the penalty. I know he thrives off confidence from his teammates, manager and supporters.
"Kelechi Iheanacho was the one who was going to have that confidence to score and it will do him a world of good. Once Kelechi gets his fitness up, he'll really contribute for us."
