He also continues to serve as captain of Portugal, guiding the national team to UEFA Nations League glory.

Now, with the 2026 FIFA World Cup set to take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, speculation is growing that this could be Ronaldo’s final shot at World Cup glory.

What Meulensteen said

Speaking to Grosvenor Sport, Meulensteen praised Ronaldo’s unwavering hunger and professionalism, “It’s remarkable at his age that he is still playing, staying fit and wanting to get to the World Cup. Cristiano Ronaldo knows what Saudi Arabia brings and how it suits his family life.”

The former coach added that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is still driven by personal milestones and national pride.

“He’s chasing records, chasing trophies. Playing in Saudi, he understands the league well, and he’s still motivated," Meulensteen said.

Portugal, led by a new generation of elite talents including João Félix, Rafael Leão, and Bruno Fernandes, is considered a strong contender for the 2026 tournament.

He said, “Portugal have so much quality in that team. It’s about the role Ronaldo can play, you can’t expect him to be 28 again, but in big moments, he knows how to deliver.

“If Portugal reaches the knockout stages, it will come down to how well their top players perform. They’re definitely in with a chance.”

Already the world’s all-time leading international goalscorer with 138 goals in 221 caps, Ronaldo has made it clear he’s far from done.
