Heung-Min Son announces he will leave Tottenham this summer
Heung-Min Son has announced that he will be leaving Tottenham this summer amid interest from LAFC in the MLS and Saudi Pro League big spenders.
The 33-year-old joined the club in the summer of 2015 from Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen. He joined as a green 23-year-old, wet behind the ears, and now leaves as a veteran club captain.
What he said
Tottenham are currently in South Korea, Son’s home country, for pre-season, and the forward took the opportunity to announce his exit from the club.
“I have asked to leave Spurs. My decision has been made; I did my best here and I need a fresh challenge now,” Son said, per Fabrizio.
“It’s the most difficult decision of my life. I came to north London as a kid. A boy who couldn’t speak English. I leave this club as a young man. Thanks to all the Spurs fans who have given me so much love.”
Son leaves a hero
Son's timing could not be any more perfect, as he is leaving after leading Tottenham to their first title in 17 years. He lifted the Europa League trophy towards the Bilbao skies as club captain two months ago, after a victory over Manchester United.
The Europa League triumph was his first as a footballer, and it also ended the drought for the club he spent 10 years of his career with and all of his prime years.
He scored 173 goals for Tottenham, according to Transfermarkt, and registered 101 assists in the 454 games he played for them. He was the Tottenham Player of the Season thrice and won the Premier League Golden Boot during the 2021/22 season.
