Former Liverpool star Javier Mascherano has offered a uniquely honest perspective on Xabi Alonso's high profile move to Real Madrid, admitting he won't be wishing his former teammate the best of luck due to his deep-rooted allegiances to Barcelona.

Alonso was appointed as Real Madrid manager, following Carlo Ancelotti's departure, bringing an end to years of speculation and marking his return to the club where he played from 2009 to 2014.

What Mascherano said

Mascherano, who enjoyed a successful eight-year spell with Barcelona, winning five La Liga titles and numerous other trophies, emphasised that his loyalties lie firmly with the Catalan giants.

Mascherano stated via Marca, â€œI haven't spoken to him. He was one of the best players I played with throughout my career. I don't wish him the best because he's at Real Madrid, but I'm sure he'll be a great coach for the club."

Despite this light-hearted refusal to offer well wishes to a rival club, Mascherano was quick to praise Alonso's coaching acumen and character.

"He did an excellent job at Bayer Leverkusen. He's a great person, and I had the privilege of playing alongside him for three years," he added.

Alonso takes over a Real Madrid side that endured a somewhat challenging 2024-25 season. They were pipped to the La Liga title by Barcelona, finishing four points adrift. Furthermore, they suffered defeat in the Copa del Rey final and were eliminated in the Champions League quarter-finals.
