‘I have a special affection for him’ — LaLiga boss hails new Super Eagles invitee
After a phenomenal debut season in La Liga, Christantus Uche is not only winning matches but also winning hearts, especially that of Getafe boss Jose Bordalás.
With a first senior Nigeria call-up now in the bag, the 22-year-old midfielder has had a sensational 2024/25 season, his first in the top flight.
Bordalás beams with pride over Uche’s breakthrough
Speaking ahead of Getafe’s season finale against Celta Vigo, manager Jose Bordalás was full of admiration for Uche.
The coach hailed the Nigerian’s commitment, calling him “a fabulous kid” and praising the maturity he’s shown despite his unconventional path to top-flight football.
“He reached professional football without going through those stages,” Bordalás said, adding, “It was difficult at times, but we tried to help him. I have a special affection for him.”
Uche has been a regular feature in Getafe’s midfield this season, with 37 appearances, four goals, and six assists across all competitions.
Super Eagles come calling after La Liga heroics
Uche’s importance to Getafe also goes beyond goals and assists, as he has earned a reputation as one of La Liga’s most fouled players, with only Vinicius Junior and Takefusa Kubo being targeted more frequently.
Uche’s brilliance at the club level has finally been rewarded on the international stage. Despite being overlooked for Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers earlier this year, he’s now earned his first senior call-up.
Head coach Eric Chelle has named him in the Super Eagles squad for the upcoming Unity Cup and a friendly clash against Russia.
If he stays fit, Uche is expected to make his debut soon, capping a whirlwind season that has turned a “risky bet” into one of Nigeria’s most exciting midfield prospects.
