The 28-year-old was released from his Sevilla contract this summer and was snapped up by Celtic, led by his former coach, Brendan Rodgers. Iheanacho has immediately gone about repaying the faith, showing incredible composure to convert a late penalty and win the game against Kilmarnock.

For much of the contest, the spectacle had been uninspiring, until Daizen Maeda’s spectacular diving header put Celtic in front before the hour mark. David Watson soon restored parity with a commanding finish of his own in the 83rd minute, setting up a tense finale.

The deadlock was finally broken when Kelechi Iheanacho, who replaced Maeda in the 70th minute, struck late on, igniting wild celebrations that momentarily overshadowed the underlying unrest among the Celtic faithful toward the board.

The goal was the Nigerian’s first in Celtic green, and he would hope it is the start of many after two disappointing spells at Sevilla and Middlesbrough

With the win, the Bhoys stay top of the log, level on points with Hearts but having a superior goal difference to the Jam Tarts.
