Ireland vs Nigeria: Super Falcons set new African record at the FIFA Women's World Cup

Nigeria made it to the round of 16 of the Women’s World Cup for the third time after playing a draw against Ireland.

The Super Falcons knew that a draw would be enough to see them through to the next round and they did a good job getting it.

Two draws and a win for the Super Falcons in a group that has Australia as the co-host, Canada as the previous Olympic gold medalist and newcomers Ireland was enough to help them qualify from the group stage.

Nigeria has set another record in the ongoing FIFA Women's World Cup by being the first African team to keep two clean sheets in the tournament.

The Super Falcons secured two draws in Group B against Canada and Ireland without conceding a goal.

The first game against Canada women who recently won the Olympics ended in a 0-0 draw while the second game against debutants, Ireland, ended in another 0-0 draw.

Nigeria is also the first African team to make back-to-back Round of 16 appearances in the Women's World Cup.

This is not the first record set by Nigeria in this ongoing competition as Asisat Oshoala also set a record of being the first African player to score in three consecutive World Cup tournaments.

The new records being set by the Super Falcons will bring smiles to the face of the Nigerian fans coupled with qualifying for the Round of 16.
