Isak to Liverpool: Newcastle to ignore Jackson and pursue Nigerian to replace wantaway forward
Newcastle United’s summer transfer window could take another twist after fresh news emerged regarding a new transfer target.
The Magpies, who ended last season in fifth place to guarantee Champions League football in the 2025-26 season, have had plans for the soon-to-begin campaign scuppered after Alexander Isak’s keenness to move to Premier League champions Liverpool.
Isak, who joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad in August 2022, has scored 62 goals in 109 appearances in all competitions for Eddie Howe's men, and the forward was instrumental in last season's EFL Cup triumph, which ended the club's wait for a domestic title since 1955.
Alexander Isak to Liverpool
However, Isak’s head has reportedly been turned by Liverpool’s interest, despite Arne Slot’s men signing Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt this summer.
The Reds have had a bid reportedly worth around £110 million (including add-ons) rejected by the Magpies, who are holding out for a fee thought to be approximately £150 million.
Having already let go of Callum Wilson on a free transfer, Howe’s men could start the 2025-26 season without a senior striker.
Newcastle’s interest in Benjamin Sesko was made public, and the Magpies attempted to complete a big-money deal for the RB Leipzig forward; however, Sesko always preferred Manchester United, and the young forward is nearing a deal to join the Red Devils.
The Magpies have also been linked with Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson and Brentford’s Yoane Wissa, the latter of whom went on strike and refused to train at Brentford before returning to Bees’ training this week.
While those forward options have been considered, The Athletic have now reported a new name on Friday.
Newcastle Transfer News: Samu Aghehowa linked with Magpies
Newcastle are reportedly considering Porto striker Samu Aghehowa as a possible centre-forward solution if they let go of Isak.
Aghehowa, who was linked with a move to Chelsea last year, eventually signed with the Portuguese giants from Atletico Madrid on a five-year deal.
The Dragons reportedly paid €15 million for 50% of his rights and also have the option to buy an additional 15% in 2025 and 2026 for €5 million each year.
Aghehowa, 21, scored 19 goals in 30 Primeira Liga appearances, with 27 in total across 45 matches in all competitions.
This prolific return has reportedly attracted the Magpies, who are impressed by the forward’s skill in scoring a range of goals from tap-ins and composed finishes to headed efforts.
What’s next for Newcastle United?
Newcastle will play two more tune-up matches: against Espanyol on August 8 (today) and against Atletico Madrid, Aghehowa's former team, on Saturday.
Afterwards, they will focus on the opening weekend of the Premier League, travelling to Aston Villa on August 16.
