‘Issue resolved’ — Ekong reveals as Super Eagles end strike, return to training ahead of Gabon playoff

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has confirmed that the team’s standoff with the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) over unpaid bonuses has come to an end.

The players, who had boycotted training earlier in the week, have now returned to full preparation for their crucial World Cup qualifying playoff against Gabon in Morocco.

In a post on X, Ekong wrote, “Issue RESOLVED. We are together and as before focussed [sic] on the games ahead! @NGSuperEagles.”

His statement came as welcome news to millions of Nigerians who had expressed frustration over the team’s earlier strike action.

The 38-year-old captain also previously dismissed reports that players had made “special” demands in camp, calling such claims “completely false.”

Ekong clarified that the team’s only concern was the settlement of legitimate outstanding payments, including bonuses for qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and reaching the current World Cup playoff stage.

The standoff had initially thrown the camp into chaos, with fans criticising the NFF for recurring financial negligence.

However, with the issue now resolved, the Super Eagles will resume training in Rabat, just 24 hours before the must-win tie against Gabon.

Coach Eric Chelle and team officials are now refocusing efforts on restoring concentration and morale within the squad.

Despite the temporary distraction, Ekong’s announcement has reignited optimism that Nigeria can overcome Gabon and keep their 2026 World Cup dreams alive.
