Jamaican sprinter Shericka Jackson, often hailed as the Caribbean nation’s “sprint queen,” has expressed mixed feelings about the lofty title as she continues her quest for an Olympic gold medal.

“Every athlete’s goal is to get a gold medal at the Olympic Games, and I love that. I crave high-intensity competition,” Jackson shared in season 2 of Netflix's Sprint.

As Jamaica's primary contender heading into the Paris Olympics, she was expected to deliver in the sprints, events that have long been the country’s pride.

Legendary sprinter Usain Bolt added to the weight of expectations, declaring Jackson as Jamaica’s best sprinting prospect.

“Shericka is the very best sprinting prospect for Jamaica, and people have made it clear, yeah girl, we’re expecting you to be the one,” Bolt remarked.

However, the Paris Olympics did not go as planned for Jackson. Her unexpected withdrawal from her signature 200m event allowed the USA’s Gabby Thomas to claim gold and grab the headlines, leaving fans and pundits alike speculating.

“It’s okay for people to have expectations of me as long as they don’t distract me or make me lose who I am as an athlete,” she said.

“They’re saying the sprint queen, but it’s not something I want. I am the next Shericka Jackson always.”
