According to Get French Football News, The potential candidates for the prestigious role are dwindling and Mbappe is in pole position.

The vacancy arose when France’s most-capped player, Hugo Lloris (36), retired from international football in the wake of Les Bleus’ World Cup final defeat to Argentina.

Steve Mandanda (37) and Karim Benzema (34) were potential candidates for the role, but both have also taken the decision to retire from international football.

Raphaël Varane, at the age of just 29, is now also set to retire from international duty, according to Le Parisien.

The fact that the player is suffering from physical and mental wear and tear, as well as the Manchester United centre-back’s desire to spend more time with his family are cited as reasons for the surprise imminent announcement.
