Super Eagles star Samuel Chukwueze opens floodgates as Villarreal pummel Osasuna

Super Eagles forward Samuel Chukwueze continued his superb 2022/23 form for Villarreal as he put the Yellow Submarine ahead on their way to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Osasuna in LaLiga. 

The scoreline might flatter Villarreal after two late goals heavily influenced what was actually a close encounter between teams separated by just four points at the start of the match, 

Chukwueze found the net after only 14 minutes, opening the scoring on the night for Villarreal, with a brilliant effort after some good work from Alfonso Pedraza. 

Villarreal did not find the net again until the 85th minute of the game and in that time, they had goalkeeper Pepe Reina to thank for keeping them ahead in the game, as he pulled off two magnificent saves from Ante Budimir and Abdessamad Ezzalzouli to keep the score at 1-0. 

Villarreal doubled their lead late in the second half when substitute Jose Luis Morales scored an outrageous goal from near the halfway line to give the Yellow Submarine a cushion.

Despite Osasuna’s best efforts, the game turned out to be a complete disaster for them as they then conceded a third goal in additional time to seal an awful outing for them. 

Villarreal’s win takes them to sixth on the table, four points from fifth place Real Betis and seven points from the last UEFA Champions League spot being occupied by Real Sociedad. 

Osasuna meanwhile remain perfectly mid-table in 10th, with six points separating them and Villarreal in the last European spot, and eight points separating them and Valencia who are 18th and in the relegation zone.

Samuel Chukwueze further justified his inclusion in the latest Super Eagles’ team to face Guinea-Bissau by scoring his third goal in five La Liga matches for Villarreal. 

The pacey winger has now scored five goals in LaLiga and assisted five more in what is shaping up to be a fine season for him. 

Chukwueze is also one of only three LaLiga players, along with Vinicius Junior and Antoine Griezmann to have both scored and assisted more than 10 goals in all competitions this season, with a perfectly balanced record of 11 goals and 11 assists in 2022/23.
