This comes according to new manager Jan Urban, who replaced Michal Probierz, the latter dismissed precisely because of a heated conflict with the Barcelona striker.
In June, Lewandowski retired after a clash with former manager Michal Probierz, who subsequently resigned due to the scandal surrounding the 36-year-old striker's demotion from the Polish captaincy.
Lewandowski set to make decision
The issue between Robert Lewandowski and the national team could be nearing a happy ending for the Polish forward. New manager Jan Urban says the return of the striker, who has 158 caps and 85 goals, is imminent.
"I asked him by phone if he wanted to come back, and Robert answered yes. So I consider that a step forward," the 63-year-old manager, hired by the Warsaw federation on July 18th, told RMF FM radio, via Abola.
Urban clarified that the captaincy for the upcoming matches hasn't been decided yet: "I don't want to discuss this matter just with Robert, but also with everyone involved. The decision will be mine, but I'd like to hear the opinions of the other players."
Poland will face the Netherlands and Finland in early September as part of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. It remains to be seen whether Lewandowski, who has a thigh injury and missed Barcelona's return to La Liga action, will be called up by the new manager.
Two months ago, Robert Lewandowski stepped down from the national team after the federation announced he would no longer be captain. He justified his decision on social media: "Given the circumstances and the loss of confidence in the Polish national team manager, I've decided to withdraw while he remains in charge. I hope to have the opportunity to play in front of the best fans in the world again."
Lewandowski had been the team's captain since 2014, taking over from Jakub Błaszczykowski. In total, Robert played 93 matches as captain, a record in the history of the Polish national team!
