Like Messi, Xavi, Puyol: Ter Stegen delivers stunning Joan Gamper speech, ends conflict with Barcelona
Marc-André ter Stegen delivered a rousing speech in his role as club captain during the traditional Joan Gamper ceremony, signalling an end to his conflict with the club.
The 33-year-old was temporarily stripped of his captaincy after refusing to sign the documents necessary for Barcelona to exploit his injury to register players. After a sit-down with the president, he shifted his stance. He signed the papers and was subsequently reinstated.
Ter Stegen’s speech
As part of the Joan Gamper Trophy, the curtain raiser for every Barcelona season since its inception, the Blaugrana's first captain addresses the fans.
Since Ter Stegen has reclaimed the position, he enjoyed the honour, confirming to fans that he had buried the hatchet with the club and promising them a successful season ahead.
“We must work every season and we will strive to compete for every title again, hoping to achieve as many as possible with your support,” he said, per Football Espana.
“Thanks to Hansi and his technical staff, who I believe did a fantastic job last year, which we enjoyed immensely as fans, and I also enjoyed as a spectator, unfortunately due to the injury.
“I think it was important to resolve the dispute between me and the club; now it’s time to look forward. We have a very tough season ahead of us. With the signings, we will be stronger. We will fight for all the trophies. I love you, culers!”
Barcelona triumph in the Gamper
The match that followed the speech was a beautiful display of attacking potency from Hansi Flick's side, as they blew away their opponents on the day, Como.
Barcelona won 5-0, with goals from Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and Fermin Lopez. Ter Stegen's replacement, Joan Garcia, had an excellent showing, as his proactive goalkeeping helped them keep a clean sheet.
