Madrid derby on the cards as Copa del Rey quarter-final draw emerges

Real Madrid have been drawn against archrivals Atletico Madrid in the most exciting match of the recently completed Copa del Rey quarterfinal matches. 

The warring neighbours are set to renew their rivalry in the last eight of the Spanish Cup after scaling through the round of 16 ties. 

Real Madrid came back from the dead against Villarreal in the round of 16, after goals from Vinicius Junior, Eder Militao, and Dani Ceballos helped them overturn a 2-0 first-half deficit. 

Atletico Madrid had a more straightforward fixture in the round of 16, beating Levante 2-0 at the Ciudad de Valencia to advance to the quarterfinals. 

Real Madrid and Atletico have not met in the Copa del Rey since 2015, when Atletico knocked Real out at the round of 16 stage, beating them 4-2 on aggregate. 

Other intriguing fixtures in the Copa del Rey quarterfinals include Barcelona, who are top of La Liga, taking on Real Sociedad, who are only six points behind them on the table. 

2022 finalists, Valencia will also play the 2021 finalists, Athletic Bilbao at the Mestalla in what is bound to be a feisty affair. 

Yaccine ‘Bono’ Bounou and Youssef En Nesyri will be up against their international teammate Abde Ezzalzouli when Sevilla take on Osasuna in the last Copa del Rey quarterfinal fixture. 

All the Copa del Rey quarterfinal final fixtures will take place on the 24th of January, 2023.
