The former England defender, one of Manchester United’s most decorated players, hailed the team’s performance under Ruben Amorim and singled out Maguire as an emerging cult hero for his growing list of decisive late goals.

Maguire is Reaching Legendary Status - Ferdinand

“Did someone ask for two wins in a row? Impressive display from the lads. And Maguire is reaching legendary status for his late goals at Manchester United,” Ferdinand wrote on social media after the match.

The Premier League clash had been a tense and fiercely contested affair, with both sides creating chances but unable to break the deadlock for much of the game.

The turning point came six minutes from time when Bruno Fernandes delivered a teasing corner that found Maguire, who rose highest above Virgil van Dijk to power his header into the bottom corner.

The goal sent the away section at Anfield into pandemonium and capped a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the once-maligned defender.

Just over a year ago, Maguire’s future at Old Trafford appeared uncertain. Stripped of the captaincy and dropped from the starting XI, he was heavily criticised by fans and pundits alike for his form and confidence.

However, under Amorim, the 31-year-old has rediscovered his composure and leadership, becoming one of United’s most reliable performers. His late goals — including a decisive winner against Wolves earlier in the season — have turned him from a target of ridicule to a symbol of resilience and redemption.

Ferdinand also praised Amorim’s challenging start to the campaign, noting that United have already faced several top-six rivals yet remain within touching distance of the Champions League spots.

“Eight games played, including Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Liverpool!” Ferdinand remarked, applauding the determination shown by the squad.

Maguire’s winner lifts Manchester United to ninth in the Premier League table on 13 points — just two behind the top four — and adds another emotional chapter to his remarkable comeback story.
