The Metropolitan Police in London confirmed to The Athletic that the man was in the Spurs' stadium stands and was ejected from the venue after a staff member allegedly overheard the comment and reported it to authorities.

The Tottenham supporter was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of "intentionally causing harassment, alarm, or distress" and has since been released on bail as the investigation continues.

Tottenham also assured The Athletic that they are cooperating with the investigation and vowed to take "the strongest possible action" against any fan using discriminatory language.

"The club is aware of the arrest of a supporter for alleged verbal abuse directed at an opposing player during Saturday's Premier League match against Manchester United," read a statement released to the publication.

"Prior to the match, all ticket holders received guidance regarding discriminatory chanting, specifically homophobic chanting. We will now support the Metropolitan Police in their investigation, and once concluded, any supporter found to have used discriminatory language will face the most severe measures, in accordance with our Sanctions and Bans Policy. We will also ensure they participate in a fan education program," the statement added.

Mason Mount, who reportedly did not notice the insults, was brought on by United manager Erik ten Hag in the 72nd minute of the two-all draw at Tottenham last Saturday.
