Manchester United eye Ghanaian-Japanese goalkeeper as De Gea saga drags on

Despite being close to a move for Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana, Manchester United are still on the hunt for another goalkeeper with an unlikely candidate among the options

Manchester United are reportedly considering a move for Urawa Red Diamonds’ 20-year-old Ghanaian-Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki as they look to add more quality to the goalkeeping department.

Manchester looking to secure Onana backups

The Red Devils have yet to agree to a new deal for Spanish goalkeeper David De Gea, who could leave the club this summer but are also likely to lose backup goalkeeper Dean Henderson, leaving them with only Tom Heaton to count on for the 2023/24 season.

With a move for Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana nearing completion, Manchester United have also set about securing a backup for the 2023 UEFA Champions League finalist, who is expected to be the starter next season.

Their hunt for a reserve goalkeeper could see them pursue a deal for Suzuki, who was born in the USA to a Ghanaian father and a Japanese mother.

The goalkeeper currently plays for Japanese side and current AFC Champions League title holders Urawa Red Diamonds, where he became the youngest player in the club’s history to sign a professional contract at only 16 years and five months.

Suzuki is believed to be a highly-rated talent and has already made his debut for the Japanese senior national team after representing the country at five age grades.
