‘Messi did more than Haaland’ - Mikel Obi backs Argentina's captain after FIFA 'The Best' triumph
Mikel expressed his support for Lionel Messi after the Inter Miami star won the award, emphasising that he believed the Argentina captain deserved it more than Haaland. The retired Nigerian midfielder was part of the panels of experts that determined the shortlists for the men's award.
Messi's achievement
Messi won the award after a voting tie-break with Manchester City striker Erling Haaland. The deciding factor came down to votes from national team captains. The period considered for the award was from December 19, 2022, to August 20, 2023, notably excluding performances from the 2022 World Cup, which Messi had won with Argentina.
This victory marked another accolade in Messi's illustrious career that has seen him win eight Ballon d'Or/FIFA Ballon d'Or, one FIFA World Player of the Year and three FIFA Best Men’s Player of the Year.
The controversy and support
Despite Haaland's remarkable achievements, including winning the treble with Manchester City and scoring 30 goals in all competitions during the considered period, Messi was chosen for the award. This decision has been met with mixed reactions, with some, like Mikel, voicing strong support for Messi.
Speaking to Sky Sports at the award ceremony in London last night, he said: "I think Messi did more than Haaland to win it in that period."
