Naija Super 8: Sporting Lagos book another derby date after stunning win vs Akwa United
Sporting Lagos are through to the final of the Naija Super 8 preseason following a pulsating clash against Akwa United.
Jonathan Alikwu was the hero of the day as Sporting came from behind to beat Akwa United 2-1 on Saturday at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan.
Sporting win the battle of the wildcards
In what was the battle of the wildcards, it was Akwa United who started the brightest.
The Promise Keepers took a first half lead courtesy of a brilliant penalty from superstar Cyril Olisema.
However, the Uyo-based side failed to hold on to their lead as Sporting fought back in the second half.
Saturday Okon continued his brilliant scoring form when he deservedly equalised for Sporting before Alikwu’s towering header sent the Sporting bench and fans into pandemonium.
It was no less than the home side deserved after what turned out to be a game of two halves.
What the result means
Following the win, Sporting booked a place in the final and another date with rivals Remo Stars.
Both sides faced off earlier on in the competition with Sporting claiming the bragging rights that time.
Remo will be looking for revenge when the two clash again for the second time with the stake higher this time.
