Nigeria vs South Africa: Bafana Bafana cleared by customs to face Super Eagles in Uyo
Finally, Bafana Bafana, the national football team of South Africa, has arrived in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state, for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against the Nigerian Super Eagles.
The Bafana Bafana spent the night in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and landed at the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, at approximately 11 a.m. today, June 6, 2024.
Because the jet landed in Nigeria after the airport in Uyo closed, Bafana Bafana's chartered flight had to make a stopover in Port Harcourt.
Bafana Bafana on arrival for Super Eagles
Post feeds on South Africa's official X page claim that the Bafana Bafana departed their homeland on Wednesday, almost four hours later than planned. As a result, they landed in Nigeria after the Uyo airport had closed.
A statement by the Bafana Bafana on social media said,"Bafana Bafana have been on the road for 18 hours and still not at base in Nigeria.
"The team is currently at Port Harcourt Airport where they cleared customs, awaiting transfer to the hotel, to spend the night.
"Uyo airport had closed by the time the team was scheduled to take off. #WCQualifiers"
They confirmed their arrival with a message that said, “Bafana Bafana have finally arrived at their base in Uyo, Nigeria.”
Before leaving the garden city on Thursday morning, they had to spend the night in Port Harcourt drafting an emergency plan.
This evening, the squad is anticipated to conduct its first training session in Uyo in anticipation of its 2026 World Cup qualification match against the Super Eagles at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, on Friday, June 7, at 8 p.m.
