Mikel reveals favourite Super Eagles moments
The former Chelsea midfielder represented the Super Eagles on 91 occasions between 2005 and 2019, becoming an icon of the national team in the process.
Mikel made a name for himself while playing for Nigeria and will be remembered as one of the greatest players to wear the green and white of the Super Eagles, with many notable moments in his career, but by his own admission, these two moments stood out during his professional career.
In an exclusive interview with PulseSports, Mikel was asked what moments stood out during his run with the Super Eagles and he replied, “Oh, well, I think I have two, probably when, the first time I made my debut for the national team, and then the second one is when I won the African Cup Nations 2013.
Mikel explains mentality behind AFCON success
The former Super Eagles captain recalled the details of the latter event, saying, “I remember when we won it, we wanted to come out of the group first and then once you come out of the group first, then you start to think about, then you start to take each game as it comes. It becomes much difficult, it becomes much more mind game.
Mikel made his debut for the Super Eagles while he was still a teenager in a friendly win over Libya in 2005 after starting for the country’s U-20 team at the U-20 World Cup that same year.
He became an integral part of the National team and was crucial to Nigeria winning the AFCON in 2013, adding a memorable national team trophy to his incredible trophy haul with Chelsea.
