Nigeria's rising stars secure spot in 2024 IHF Women's Youth Championship
In a resounding victory, Nigeria’s under-18 women’s handball team clinched their place in the 2024 IHF Women’s Youth World Championship slated for next year.
The women’s team delivered a commanding performance against North African giants, Morocco, to seal an impressive 14-point victory.
Nigeria’s under-18s were too hot for their Moroccan counterparts after a 28-14 win for the Nigerians at the Africa Women’s Youth handball Championship in Monastir, Tunisia.
How Nigeria secured the win
Approaching the match with the gravity it deserved, Nigeria’s youngsters understood that a win would guarantee them access to the global event.
Therefore, the team stepped on the court with the requisite determination and took control of the clash from the outset.
Nigeria’s under-18s dominated the opening half after an impressive 17-5 lead at the break.
In the second half, their opponents from Morocco came out fighting and they would not fall without a fight. A resilient display from the Moroccan ensured the half was a more difficult one for Nigeria.
However, the girls were able to hold on to seal the victory and secure their spot in the World Championship.
Star of the day
Chidera Ogwumismba was the obvious standout performer for Nigeria as her stellar display earned her a well-deserved MVP of the encounter.
Ogwumismba’s performance ensured a historic moment for Nigeria as the country claimed a spot in the semifinal of the African event and also a ticket to the world event slated for China next year.
What’s next?
Apart from the semifinals in the African championship, the journey does not end there for the under-18s.
The girls are expected to participate in the IHF Women Trophy Intercontinental Phase later this year, which will provide them with more opportunities to showcase their burgeoning talents on the international stage.
