Public Health Concerns Puts Breaks on Sailfish Swim Club Masters Gala
The 2026 Sailfish Swim Club Masters Gala, a highly anticipated event on the Ugandan swimming calendar, has been postponed due to public health restrictions implemented by the Ministry of Health.
The measures, which limit mass gatherings in the Kampala Metropolitan Area and other high-risk districts, were enacted in response to the ongoing Ebola outbreak.
Scheduled for Saturday, June 13, at Ambrosoli International School, the gala was set to be its largest edition yet, with over 150 swimmers from Uganda and abroad expected to compete.
In a statement, the event's organising committee affirmed that its top priority is the health and safety of all participants, including swimmers, spectators, officials, and partners. While acknowledging the disappointment for athletes who had been training for months, the committee described the postponement as the most responsible course of action given the circumstances.
"We were looking forward to hosting the event, but postponement is the most responsible decision at this time," the committee stated in its communication to stakeholders.
Swimming Fraternity Feels Wight of Restrictions
This delay affects what would have been the third edition of the gala, an event that has quickly become a key celebration of adult swimming and active lifestyles in Uganda. The competition is designed for swimmers aged 25 and older, attracting a diverse mix of former competitive athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and professionals.
More than just a race, the gala has evolved into a community gathering that promotes lifelong fitness and social engagement. It provides a platform for adults to stay active, build friendships, and inspire healthier living, whether they are returning to the pool after a long break or are seasoned recreational swimmers.
The significant interest in the 2026 event, with a record number of entries from both local and international swimmers, underscores the growing popularity of masters swimming in the region. This increasing global participation also highlights Uganda's emergence as a destination for aquatic sports and fosters connections within the international swimming community.
Organisers have clarified that the event is postponed, not cancelled. A new date will be announced once the public health situation improves and authorities deem it safe to hold large gatherings. The rescheduled event will be coordinated with the Uganda Aquatics calendar, which includes major events like the National Swimming Championships in July and the CANA Zone 3 Championships in October, to ensure maximum participation and a safe return to competition.
