The Steve Tikolo era for the Uganda Cricket Cranes began with a defeat in their first tour match in Namibia, but the new head coach will have found some positives to build on despite the loss.

In the T20 fixture, Uganda handed debuts to promising youngsters Gerald Olipa and Anas Baig. After winning the toss, the Namibian Eagles XI opted to field first.

Uganda's innings started brightly with a 58-run opening partnership between Simon Ssesazi (33) and Robinson Obuya (28). However, the team failed to build on this solid foundation. Following the openers, only debutants Olipa (14) and Baig (16) managed to reach double figures as the middle order struggled. The slow leg-spin of Nicole Loftie-Eaton (2/15) proved particularly effective, stifling Uganda's momentum in the final five overs. The Cricket Cranes concluded their 20 overs with a total of 131/9.

Unbeaten Partnership

In their defense of the modest total, Uganda struck early, with Juma Miyagi and Riazat Ali Shah each claiming a wicket. Unfortunately for the tourists, those were the only breakthroughs they would manage.

A commanding, unbeaten partnership from Nicole Loftie-Eaton (72) and Captain Dylan Leicher (48) saw the Eagles XI cruise to victory. The pair chased down the target comfortably, securing the win inside 14 overs.

Despite the defeat, there were encouraging signs, particularly from the debutants. Olipa and Baig showed flashes of their potential, though their inexperience was also evident. Olipa was dismissed shortly after hitting a six, while Baig was run out attempting a risky second run.

Lots for Tikolo to Learn

Simon Ssesazi, returning to the team, looked comfortable at the top of the order but will need to convert his strong starts into more significant scores. A key concern for coach Tikolo will be the fragile middle order, which lacked the power-hitting required to accelerate the run rate in the crucial final overs.

While the bowlers had little to defend, Juma Miyagi and Cosmas Kyewuta showed good pace. However, with such a small margin for error, their impact was limited. Spinners Joseph Baguma and Henry Ssenyondo worked to slow the scoring, but the total was never enough to seriously challenge the Namibian side.

The Cricket Cranes will face the Eagles XI again on Thursday, with Tikolo undoubtedly looking for a much-improved performance from his squad.
